Young Grandma Goes for a Contemporary, Eclectic Look

Yes, I wore this to work on my 50th birthday

How would you describe your fashion look?

My fashion look is trendy and contemporary. 50 is the new 30, or so they say, and I'm embracing it. I would have to say that my dressing style is how I decorate my house: eclectic. That's just me and I like the fact that I am unpredictable with what I wear, and I refuse to don elastic pants, polyester, or unfitted clothing.

How do you achieve your look?

I pick colors that are me. I have lighter, olive color skin and dark hair which means that summers are kind to me and allow for a variety in my wardrobe.

Colors vary from khaki to white to black to pastels, although I am careful on the pastels. I can't stand sickly sweet colors, and I don't like large colorful prints (especially flower or botanical prints). I suppose you could say I like a more demure but classic look while continuing to remain unpredictable.

I recall coming into work one day and a boss and two coworkers told me they had been talking about me. "Oh?" I said. They went on and commented that they eagerly await seeing me walking through that door each morning because they love my clothing choices and color choices. They added that I can dress "wild" or "quiet" and I still look good.

The fabrics that I love are cottons, silks and lace. I love the look of linen, but I hate the way it wrinkles. It never looks the same again once it's been washed or dry-cleaned, so I stay away from it. Fitted seersucker skirts during the hot months scream, "Summer!" They are classy, never go out of style, and they have a look about them that never ages.

Tips and Tricks

  • I watch what I eat and take excellent care of my health by making sure I take a multi-vitamin and a few supplements. At 5'9" tall and 50 years of age, I weigh 120 pounds. It does a lot for the way one wears trendy clothing.
  • I exercise by walking and do silly yoga moves with my two year old grandson. He loves it and I show him a new move every now and then. He is fascinated, we get to do something together, and I get a good workout.
  • I'm careful to accent the parts of my body that are attractive and draw attention away from the less attractive areas.

My Taste in Jewelry

My jewelry taste is varied. I like baubles and bling. I love large dangly earrings and long strands of big, chunky beads. I wear earrings so that they are noticed. My hair length is just above the shoulder and so, if I want to add an easy accent to an outfit, big, gorgeous earrings are it.

My Take on Shoes and Handbags

I never knew how fabulously shoes could accent an outfit until I had my mid-life crisis at around age 43! What an eye-opener the new awareness of using shoes as an accent piece was.

I don't much like handbags. I carry one because I think I have to.

More Fun Accessories

I occasionally accessorize with clips in my hair. For example, I'll pull back my hair with a lovely clip that sparkles - nothing too big or pronounced - but just something that says I am thinking about how I am presenting myself.

What I'd Never Wear

There isn't much I wouldn't try. But I refuse to wear hip huggers or anything that exposes my belly. For my age, tank tops are inappropriate and I would never wear short shorts.

Susan Adcox, Grandparents Guide, says:

I doubt that there's anyone in the room who doesn't envy this gorgeous grandmother! LiamsGrandma has a great body and style to spare. (She also makes some awesome soap.) Enjoy her blog, which is also hip and eclectic, at Liam's Grandma or Maggie in Real Life.
