Some date; some legislate. Most babysit, and at least one is raising her grandchildren. In the fields of show business and politics, some of the women who entertain, inform and inspire us are grandmothers. Find out more about celebrity grandmothers, their grandparenting histories and their peculiar challenges.
1. Martha Stewart
2. Kris Jenner
Kris Jenner of "Keeping Up with the Kardashians," became a grandmother on Dec. 14, 2009. Her daughter Kourtney had a son, Mason Dash Disick, with boyfriend Scott Disick. With a "Your, Mine and Ours" family consisting of her four children with the late Robert Kardashian, Jenner's four children and the two children that the couple had together, it's fairly certain that there will be more grandchildren in her future.
3. Sarah Palin
4. Goldie Hawn
The Sock-It-To-Me girl is a grandmother. Daughter Kate Hudson has one son, Ryder, born in 2004, and is expecting a baby with new boyfriend Matthew Bellamy. Son Oliver Hudson and his wife, actress Erinn Bartlett have two sons, Wilder Brooks Hudson, born in 2007, and Bodhi Hawn Hudson, born in 2010. Actor Kurt Russell has been Hawn's partner since 1983, but the two have never married. Goldie's grandmother name is Gogo. How perfect is that?
5. Joan Rivers
In 1965 Joan Rivers had her first plastic surgery. In 2000 she became a grandmother. Edgar Cooper Endicott is daughter Melissa's son with then-husband John Endicott. Joan was reportedly bored with Cooper when he was an infant, but found that she could trade jokes with him when he was just one year old. Rivers told grandparents.com that Cooper sometimes calls her Grammy and sometimes calls her Nana New Face. Some would say that the second name fits her to an E!
6. Marian Robinson
We've had First Grannies before, but this one actually lives in the White House, which hasn't happened since the Eisenhower administration. Marian Robinson is the in-house granny to the Obama girls: Malia, born July 4, 1998, and Sasha, born June 10, 2001. Marian Robinson's son Craig Robinson, the father of three, was the first to elevate her to granny status in 1992. Grandmothers have already figured large in the Obama history. President Obama was raised largely by his grandmother.
7. Blythe Danner
8. Nancy Pelosi
9. Whoopi Goldberg
Whoopi Goldberg has an Oscar, an Emmy, a Grammy and a Tony, but she may be prouder of her Amarah, Jerzey and Mason, her three grandchildren. Goldberg was a mother at 18 and a grandmother at 34. In fact, her first granddaughter was born on her 34th birthday in 1989. She's not wild about the next step, however, telling the Daily Mail, "I accepted the grandmother thing in my thirties, but great-grandchildren I’m not doing."
10. Priscilla Presley
11. Katherine Jackson
As the matriarch of the musical Jackson clan, Katherine Jackson must have been used to being in the public eye. But nothing could have prepared her for the media circus surrounding the death of her most famous son, Michael, and her assumption of the custody of his children, Prince Michael I, Paris Michael Katherine and Prince "Blanket" Michael Jackson II. Katherine Jackson has been a grandmother since 1971 and a great-grandmother since 2000, but now in her eighties, she has the job of a lifetime.
