What Grandparents Should Know About the Advantages of Facebook

Family Connectedness Isn't the Only Reason to Jump Into Social Networking

By , About.com Guide

Want to see a video of your grandchild's first step or read about a grandson's first home run? Facebook is the place, especially if you're a long-distance grandparent. Seeing those smiling faces just may be the best way to beat the blues. But there's more to love about the social networking site. Read on for more about the advantages of Facebook.

Keep Up With Loved Ones

Facebook is a great place to keep up with family members. Once your grandchildren turn 13, they'll be able to join Facebook, and they probably will. Even if your grandchildren are still in their infancy, you'll enjoy the following capabilities:

  • Post and view photos.
  • Post and view videos.
  • Share interesting links.
  • Post messages that all family members who are part of Facebook can see.
  • Send private messages, which are threaded for better communication.
  • Search for members of the extended family.

Find Friends

If you've ever wondered about your best friends from elementary school, Facebook may be your best hope of locating them. Once you have a significant number of friends, Facebook is really adept at suggesting other people that you may know, based on your friends' friends. You can also search by entering your high school or college, your employer, your hometown or your current city. You can even enter the name of a friend and look for mutual friends.

Find Those Who Share Your Causes and Hobbies

Maybe you're interested in environmental issues. Maybe you want to find someone to swap woodworking tips with. Whatever your special interest, there's likely to be a Facebook page--or a dozen--dedicated to it. These fellow enthusiasts can be a great source of information, advice and support.

Play Online Games

As millions can testify, games offered on Facebook can be addictive. They can also be stimulating and fun. Online games, especially those with a time factor, are excellent for brain fitness. If your grandchildren are old enough to game with you--what could be better?

Connect With Teenage Grandchildren

If you are one of those lucky ones who does have grandchildren on Facebook, you'll want to be a good Facebook friend and not one who tempts them to use the "unfriend" function. Here are some guidelines:

  • Don't criticize their friends, posts or photos. If you have a genuine concern about a post, talk to them in person or consult their parents.
  • Don't post anything that will embarrass them. In fact, proceed slowly when posting anything at all on their wall.
  • If in doubt, use a private message.

Summing Up the Advantages of Facebook

Family, friends and fun: These are the major reasons people join Facebook. Millions of grandparents love it. You could be one of them.
