Common Sense Ways for Grandparents to Save Money

By , About.com Guide

21. Defensive Driving Saves Lives and Money

You probably know that you can take defensive driving instead of paying a ticket to protect your driving record. What you may not know is that you can also take defensive driving to lower your car insurance. A typical savings is 10% of your auto insurance bill, and the savings is good for three years. A typical online course costs $25.

22. Try a Car Boot Sale

The British have a good idea for a variation on the classic garage or yard sale. It's the car boot sale. It requires a group of sellers and a parking lot. The sellers pack their goods in their car "boots" or trunks, then pull into a parking place, pop out a folding table or a blanket and set out their goods for sale.

23. Check for Senior Discount on Groceries

My local Kroger store offers a 10% discount to seniors on the first Wednesday of each month. Other chains have similar events. Call your local grocery stores and check their senior deals and discounts, or ask if they are matching Kroger's deal.

24. Visit Your Local Library Online

We know that thrifty people use their local libraries for books, CDs and DVDs, but here's a new money-saving wrinkle. Visit your library online and download free audio books and e-books. You won't even burn gas if you visit online, and there are no late fees or fines because there's nothing to return.

25. Save For College With UPromise

UPromise members earn rewards for shopping. The rewards are in the form of donations to a college account for the person you designate. The UPromise site also has grocery coupons. Instead of deducting the coupon amount from your total, the coupon value goes into the account you have designated.

26. Give E-Couponing a Whirl

For the uninitiated, e-coupons are located online and saved to your grocery loyalty card. The coupon value is automatically deducted when your card is scanned. I don't think you'll miss juggling those tiny bits of paper and perusing expiration dates in miniscule print.

27. Check Out Community Freebies

If you want to learn a skill or just hang out with your peers, don't overlook the local community center. Lots of lessons, classes and activities are free for senior citizens, and other are real bargains.

28. Find Free Shipping

Freeshipping.org is my new favorite website. It gives you one place to look for free shipping and coupons. You'll never again go off on an Internet wild goose chase that yields only expired coupons.

29. Skip the Dry Cleaners

"Dry clean" and "dry clean only" mean two entirely different things. Go for garments with the first tag, and you might just save a bundle.

30. Enjoy America the Beautiful

The America the Beautiful Senior Pass from the National Park Service is the best bargain ever. Get in free to the most breathtaking landscapes the United States has to offer? It's one reason to celebrate being 62. Maybe the only reason.
