Phil McGraw grew up in Oklahoma and Texas with his parents and three sisters and followed his father into psychology. He caught the attention of Oprah Winfrey when his firm, Courtroom Sciences, Inc., was hired to work with Winfrey's defense in the famous "beef libel" lawsuit. The rest is history. The Dr. Phil show has received 21 Emmy nominations. McGraw is also the author of a number of books, six of which have reached the top of the New York Times bestseller list. Weight loss began to be one of McGraw's major topics around 2003.
McGraw married at the age of 20, but the marriage lasted only a few years. He married Robin Jameson in 1976. They have two sons.
Dr. Phil's son Jay McGraw and his wife Erica have two children. Avery Elizabeth McGraw was born on March 17, 2010. Dr. Phil tweeted and blogged about her and had her on his show in May. "This is such a life-changing event that I don’t even know where to start," he blogged. And the man who promotes tough love on his TV show added, "Robin and I, along with Uncle Jordan, gladly accept the challenge to make her the most spoiled granddaughter on the globe!" McGraw's second grandchild, London Phillip McGraw, was born on Sept. 1, 2011, on Dr. Phil's 61st birthday. McGraw was named 2010's Sexiest Celebrity Grandparent by Grand Magazine.
According to the bio on his website, Dr. Phil enjoys playing tennis and golf and scuba diving. He and Robin are also active in the Dr. Phil Foundation, a non-profit established in 2003.
