Plan Now for Saturday's Day of Service

If you've been looking for a way to introduce volunteering to your grandchildren, next Saturday might be the day. Just as he did before his first swearing-in, President Barack Obama is asking Americans to participate in a National Day of Service. Four years ago, President Obama's day of service coincided with Martin Luther King Day, which was designated a day of service by Congress in 1994. This year, the public inauguration will occur on MLK Day, thus the shift to Saturday.

President Obama has been a big booster of roll-up-the-shirt-sleeves volunteerism. During his first term, Sept. 11 was designated as a day of service and remembrance, and the President also established a National Volunteer Week in April. He and family members have volunteered at construction projects and soup kitchens.

If you need help coming up with your own volunteering venue, this article about volunteering with grandchildren may help. You can also use the search function on the United We Serve website to find an appropriate activity.

I favor schools requiring volunteer work from students because so much value is gained. Besides empathy, resume experiences are earned. Certainly it’s the responsibility of parents to model the role, but what a unique opportunity for grandparents to bond with their kids. My grandchildren are too young for this yet, but I appreciate the idea and am adding it to my “things to do” list for when they are ready to accompany grandma on a good will mission!

Amara and I are signing up to do the March of Dimes walk again in April. Volunteering is really important for children to learn and I think her parents (and us) have taught her well.
