Thrifty Thursday: Free SilverSneakers Fitness Program

If you are a grandparent who is old enough for Medicare, you may be missing out on a cost-free benefit. SilverSneakers is a program offered through many suppliers of Medicare supplement plans. It provides free access to participating fitness centers, including many YMCAs. The facilities offer SilverSneakers classes designed for older adults. They also employ special advisers  to help seniors get started on their exercise programs. Interested?

Traveling seniors can visit any participating center. There is also a self-directed program called SilverSneakers Steps for those who don't live near a location.

Last year our Guide to Heart Health, Richard N. Fogoros, M.D., reported a decrease in Medicare patients suffering heart attacks. One of his commenters speculated that the decrease could be due to SilverSneakers. It's just possible that, besides saving you some money, SilverSneakers could save your life.

I once wished I was old enough to ride the school bus, then I wished I was old enough to date and drive, now you are making wish I was old enough for Silver Sneakers!
