My family's favorite way to travel is to rent cabins, condos or houses for extended stays, but there are times when we have to stay in hotels or motels, especially when we're on the road to our final destination. During our last trip with my daughter and her family, we had some pleasant and reasonable motel stays. Here's what I learned about saving money on lodging when traveling with a group:
- Suites can save you money. One suite can sometimes replace two rooms.
- If there is a particular motel or hotel chain that you like, consider joining their program for frequent visitors. Joining is free, it expedites check-in and it may entitle you to free upgrades--maybe to a suite.
- Book online through one of the discount services only if you are sure of your itinerary. These services may save you money, but your card is charged immediately. If anything happens, you can't cancel. In addition, there are often special fees.
- Chains that offer free breakfast can save you the $5 or so per person that you would normally spend for breakfast. If there are four of you traveling together, that's at least $20. The free breakfasts are normally kid-friendly choices like cereal, fruit and yogurt.
- Choose a room with money-saving amenities. A pool will keep the kids occupied for no extra expense, and a mini-fridge and microwave can save you money on snacks.
- Ask for a better rate. Never assume that the first price you are given is the best price you can get.
